Recruitment and Retention Workshop

20th February 2010.

The Workshop was well-attended by representatives of clubs from Plymouth to Edinburgh and everywhere in-between. Informative presentations were given by Anne Beasley (Green Street Blues, Sevenoaks) and Mick Kett (BABS Membership Development Director)) punctuated by questions from the floor.

Group Sessions followed, allowing participants to share experiences, ask questions, raise concerns and listen to the solutions offered by others who had faced similar problems.

You can judge for yourself how successful it was from some of the feedback received:

“A useful and thought-provoking day. Well organised and very enjoyable.” (Oxford Harmony).

“We have just completed our 4th LTS course so we now have quite a lot of experience at running them and dealing with the associated problems of retention. I smugly thought there wouldn't be much we could learn on the day about doing it any better. How wrong I was! The breakout discussions were very constructive and emphasised that there is no one way to keep people enthused.” (Knights of Harmony, Chess Valley).

“We had a really fab. Day; it was so uplifting. Everyone gelled and were so very friendly and so full of ideas…we came away well-informed and feeling extremely motivated and ready to go.” (Sound Waves, Blackpool).

“One of Anne Beasley's slides in particular made me question immediately what we are doing about recruitment. The 'Why? Who? Where? and How?’ questions are probably the most important pointers to everything we do about membership within our Associations”. (MK A’Cappella, Milton Keynes).

“The presentations were thorough but humorous (always a good approach) and the discussion groups were well led and everyone made relevant comments”. (The Pilgrimaires, Plymouth).

“I feel that I came away with good and positive means to take back to the chorus, with fuel to help promote and make a better structure for future expansion, hopefully, of our chorus”. (The Telfordaires, Telford).

“As my club is about to start its first Learn to Sing course it was great to have a forum for people to share experiences and really useful to hear the practical advice that came in from the speakers and also other participants.” (Guildford Harmony).

“What an excellent day it was; we had plenty to take back to our Chorus.” (Silver Lining, Heart of England).

“The Group Discussions highlighted many shared challenges and issues and generated lots of lively debate and suggestions that we could all take away from the day. Overall a constructive and informative day.” (Vale Connection, Evesham).
